Horrible Histories Bring Medieval Mischief to Leeds Castle This May

This May half term, families can step back in time for a brilliantly gruesome adventure at Leeds Castle with Horrible Histories: Queen Eleanor’s Guide to Surviving the Middle Ages. Running from 26th to 31st May 2026, this interactive experience invites children and grown-ups alike to uncover the rotten realities of medieval life alongside Queen Eleanor of Castile. Forget fairy tales and lavish banquets, this is the Middle Ages as you’ve never seen it before, packed with bizarre facts and disgusting discoveries, promising a hilariously unforgettable family experience.

Set within the stunning grounds of Leeds Castle, the immersive family trail challenges visitors to discover what it really took to survive in 1278. From navigating medieval travel methods and sorting gruesome feasts from modern favourites, to exploring bonkers medieval medicine and stomach-turning hygiene habits, every stop on the trail offers a fun and educational activity designed to entertain curious minds of all ages.

Combining the much-loved humour of Horrible Histories with the rich heritage of Leeds Castle, this May Half Term event offers the perfect day out for families looking to mix learning with adventure. Families can also visit Leeds Castle’s major new exhibition, ‘Pilgrimage of Love: Eleanor of Castile’ offering visitors the chance to explore the life and legacy of the formidable Queen of England and Leeds Castle’s first female owner. Included with admission, the exhibition features the world’s first interactive historical AI avatar, bringing Eleanor’s story to life through innovative technology, immersive interpretation and original research.

For those who would like to extend their visit, Leeds Castle offers a selection of accommodation, from lodges and cottages to a charming bed and breakfast. To add to the experience, overnight stays also include exclusive access to the captivating grounds once the gates have been closed to day visitors.

Stay in the Castle’s new family accommodation, Knights’ Retreat, which offers eight lodges inspired by medieval myth, with space for up to five people per lodge, nestled within the castle’s 500-acre estate.

For group getaways there’s Battel Hall, a wisteria-wrapped medieval gem, which can host up to 14 people, and offers an extravagant stay steeped in character. Designed by series 3 Traitors star and interior designer Francesca Rowan-Plowden, her distinctive style and flair bring a touch of drama to the historic manor. While Maiden’s Tower is ideal for families and history lovers alike, combining Tudor charm with modern comfort. It has a rich history and was allegedly used by Katherine of Aragon’s Maid of Honour during her wedding to King Henry VIII.

Alternatively, Leeds Castle’s six luxury historic holiday cottages are located across its stunning estate, surrounded by wonderful woodland scenery. Hosting between two and 12 people, Weir Cottage, Battel Cottage and Keeper’s House are all pet friendly, so the whole family can come along. The properties offer all the necessities for a self-catering stay as well as stunning views across the Kent countryside. For those who would like to opt for a B&B stay, Stable Courtyard offers a cosy and characterful place to stay within the heart of the estate.
