A slice of the Italy in an urban jungle at Osteria at the Barbican

In the heart of London’s concrete jungle, discover a gem of a modern Italian restaurant. Osteria, located on the second floor of the Barbican Centre overlooking the iconic lakeside and fountains, brings a slice of Italy to the area’s modern, brutalist surroundings. Expect bold, regional Italian dishes, an exclusively Italian wine list and a dedicated Negroni Bar.

Open for lunch and pre-theatre dining, Osteria’s menus offers exceptional value with two fabulous courses at lunch for £19.50 and three-course pre-theatre dining from £29.50. Whilst a must-book for visitors to the Barbican Centre, it’s a popular lunchtime spot for locals in the know and early evening diners.

The Menu

Led by Head Chef Clifton D’Souza, the menu focuses on simple and delicious Italian dishes where seasonal ingredients take centre stage. Typical starters might include the likes of Burrata Pugliese with peas, confit leeks and parsley with house-made pasta dishes featuring Paccheri mixed with smoked tomato pesto and toasted pumpkin seeds and Ossobuco tortellini in marsala sauce with hazelnuts.

Additional mains come in the form of Pan-fried coley with shaved fennel, coco bean and clam stew, Braised beef Parmigiana of roasted aubergine, mozzarella and Cavolo Nero; and a succulent Seared chicken breast with sweetcorn, burnt leeks and toasted hazelnuts.

There is also a selection of rotating monthly specials, with October featuring Pan-seared scallops, Romesco sauce and nduja with crispy prosciutto crudo, a Beef tagliata, potato terrine, piquillo pepper purée, and Beef carpaccio, caperberries, Parmesan ice cream and sourdough crisp.

Dolci to delight includes the October special of the Insta-worthy White chocolate bomb; Osteria’s signature Tiramisu; sorbets in flavours including Campari and Aperol; and an Italian cheese plate served with pane carasau.

The menu is complemented with a carefully curated, exclusively Italian wine list featuring producers from Breganze and Veneto through to Puglia and Sicily, as well as a small selection of bubbles, including Searcys own Selected Cuvée Brut.

The Negroni Bar

For after-work drinks and pre-dinner aperitifs, head to the Negroni bar where Osteria’s talented team have created a special 10-strong menu of Negronis. Running from The Classic, the drink that started it all, to inventive variations including the blush-coloured, Ultimate Pink Negroni with Aperol, Rose Vermouth and pink gin, and the decadent Chocolate Lovers Negroni with Crème de Cacao and Chocolate Bitters.

Osteria is now open for lunch 12 noon – 2.30pm and pre-theatre dining 4.30pm – 7pm Tuesday to Saturday, with bookings available at www.osterialondon.co.uk.
